When I started my other blog on personal finance at the end of 2018, the primary reason that I did it was so that I could one day work from home. In this article, I will share what I feel are some of the best work from home jobs. Many of these are some of the best side jobs or best side hustles for moms to get in to.
With this blog, my goal is to help moms to live their best life, whatever that means for them. And for many moms, I believe being able to work from home allows the freedom we desire. This freedom allows us to be there for our children while still helping to provide for our family’s needs.

Why Work from Home?
As much as I talk about saving money on my blog (I talk about it a lot more than I talk about earning money), and as much as I feel that being able to save money is honestly the more important skill of the two (because no matter how much you earn, you can always outspend your income), I feel that the ability to increase your income is the potentially more powerful and impactful of the two because of the amazing things you can do with an increased income.
There is only so far you can cut your expenses (though you can cut them a lot!). But your ability to increase your income is virtually limitless! And here are my four favorite ways to do that.
And working from home, either as an entrepreneur/your own boss or with a profitable side hustle, is one of the best ways to increase your income. That’s why I think that working from home is such a great opportunity for so many of us!
You don’t have to deal with commutes. You don’t have to have a designer wardrobe. You can eat the wonderful food in your fridge so you are less tempted to spend money eating out. And in many cases, you can work around your children’s schedules or (if they are a little older) work while they do school at home or other things.
What Kind of Work Can I Do from Home?
Since you are interested in some of the best and easy work from home jobs, you probably want to know the kind of work you can do from home.
Obviously anything you can do solely remotely is a great candidate for a work from home job. Anything that you can do solely on the computer is another great option when seeking work from home opportunities.
I share lots of examples below (beyond just my favorite work from home jobs) of potential work from home jobs for moms (and everyone else :)).
Can You Work from Home with No Experience?
Yes, definitely! Most of the bloggers that I know, for example, had no experience doing it before they started their online businesses (which is what a blog is :)). And many of them now make between $5,000 to $10,000 a month or more now. (Here are some examples.) It’s pretty awesome.
For other jobs where you want to work from home you often don’t need any experience. But some of them do require you to have certain skills, such as speaking another language or having strong computer or sales skills.
Other jobs that you can do from home with no experience include these:
- ESL tutoring
- English tutoring
- Academic tutoring
- Translation
- Virtual assistant
- Search engine evaluation
- Customer service
- Data entry
- Call center support
- Telemarketing
- Collections agency rep
Those are all fairly easy work from home jobs that you can do. And many of them are a lot of fun, too!
The Best Work from Home Jobs
I know there are many people, like me, who long to be able to work from home all of the time. And for some of us, the current situation with the pandemic, as devastating as it has been, has had the silver lining of making that possibility of working from home a reality (at least for the time being :)).
In this part of the article, I am going to share what I believe are some of the best work from home jobs.
1. Blogging
Blogging is my favorite work from home job.
I love blogging because I love to write (I was an English major in college), but I love it even more because of the flexibility it offers (to be able to earn money from home on your own schedule, for example) and the awesome earning potential. It fluctuates some, but these days I usually earn between $2,000 to $3,000 a month on my blog (that does not include any money earned from blogging about blogging), and it’s gotten to the point now where it can be fairly passive.
I still try to write at least one article a week because I enjoy doing it and I want to keep the Google algorithm happy, but I don’t have to. And that’s another one of the benefit of blogging. It requires a fair amount of work at the beginning to create content in order to drive traffic, but as time goes on, it requires less work, and you start to make money (depending on your monetization strategies) on autopilot.
Another benefit of blogging is that it is so cheap to get started. That’s one of the reasons that I started a second blog a couple of weeks ago. 🙂
This second blog is catered to mamas, and it’s called A Mom’s Best Life.
The ability to be able to work from home someday and have more time with my children (and have the many other benefits of working from home!) was the main reason that I first started a blog about two years ago now.
And working from home/working for yourself is a topic that I am passionate about! For mamas (and dads, too!) who want to be able to work from home so that they can have more flexibility and have their children with them, I want to help you get there!
2. Proofreading
You may not know this about me, but my full-time job is as an editor, so proofreading is something that is near and dear to my heart. If you’re a word nerd like me, if you would love to get paid to read novels or other books or blogs, if typos in memes just make your toes curl, then check out Caitlin’s popular Proofread Anywhere course.
You can also learn more about the course and about making a part- or full-time income proofreading by attending this free 60-minute online webinar.
3. Transcription
I also did some transcription work while I was in college, and this can be a great way to earn a part- or full-time income from home—especially with all of the virtual and remote meetings and gatherings that are happening these days.
And it can be really interesting work, as you get to capture in written form humorous stories, or passionate stories, or heartwarming stories and experiences.
You can learn more about the possibilities for earning an income as a transcriptionist here.
4. Freelance Writing
I have also been doing freelance writing for years, from before the time I graduated from college. It too can be a wonderful way to earn money from home.
Depending on the experience that you have, it can pay really well, too!
You can find 27 potential jobs for freelance writers in this article.
You can find opportunities for freelance writing on indeed.com, ziprecruiter.com, monster.com, and other popular online job boards,
5. Virtual Assisting
Being a virtual assistant can be another great way to earn money from home doing fun work. As a VA for a blogger, you might read through and respond to emails, respond to comments on Facebook or Instagram, create pins for Pinterest, do proofreading, or help to finalize blog posts.
Or as a VA for another type of business owner, you might schedule appointments, make phone calls, make travel arrangements, help to manage email and social media accounts, and more.
One legitimate resource for receiving training as a VA is the Horkey HandBook, by Gina Horkey.
