The bad thing about grocery shopping is that it can be so expensive! But the great thing about grocery shopping is that there are so many ways that you can save money! In this article I share some of my best grocery money saving tips and simple grocery hacks to save money.

Easy Ways to Save Even More on Your Groceries

Before we get into the grocery money saving tips below, I wanted to share one of the easiest ways to save money on groceries.

That is to use grocery money saving apps. Three of my favorite apps for saving money on groceries are IbottaRakuten (formerly Ebates), and Fetch Rewards (use XGGVM to get 2,000 bonus points when you sign up!). They are an easy way to save money on groceries every time you shop.

1. Plan your meals before you shop.

To help you save the most money on groceries, plan your meals before you shop. This helps you to stick to your budget.

This also helps you to reduce the number of times you go grocery shopping. This is because when you make a weekly meal plan, you can make a list of items that you need for those meals buy everything you need for the week in one trip.

2. Use coupons or rebate apps.

Like I mentioned briefly in the section above, it’s also really easy to use coupons and money-saving apps to help you slash your grocery budget.

You can get coupons from your weekly ads in the mail, or there are tons of coupons online, as well.

3. Shop with a grocery list and be familiar with regular grocery store prices.

Shopping with a grocery list is so important when it comes to the best grocery money saving tips.

By shopping with a grocery list, you can avoid grabbing things randomly on the shelf just because you’re hungry and they look good. 🙂 So you end up with fewer impulse buys.

Shopping lists help you stay on track with your grocery budget and spend less money.

4. Buy items on sale, and stock up.

Another of my favorite grocery money saving tips is to buy items when they are on sale, and to stock up as much as is feasible.

To make this work effectively, you have to buy items that your family will actually eat, and that they will eat in a reasonable amount of time.

So, for example, if you love a particular type of cereal and it goes on sale for half price, buy half a dozen or a dozen of themwhatever will realistically fit in your pantry or cupboards (or on top of your fridge; that’s where we keep most of our cereal :)).

You can also stock up on your favorite canned soups, vegetables, and fruits; stock up on packaged pastas and grains and beans; and stock up on regular food staples like flour and sugar.

If you have freezer space, you can also stock up on things like bread, tortillas shells, meats, frozen vegetables and berries and other fruits, and shredded cheese.

5. Limit the amount of soda, junk food, and convenience items you buy.

Have you taken an inventory to see just how much money you spend on soda, junk food, and convenience items (like cut and prepackaged fruits and vegetables and salads, small packages of cookies and chips, prepared dinners, and so on) every month?

It might be pretty eye opening.

Save a ton of money by taking a few minutes in the evening or morning to cut your own fruits and vegetables.

Make use of your slow cooker (Crockpot or Instant Pot) for quick meal prep.

And eat more fruits and vegetables and fewer chips, crackers, cookies, and other junk food to save tons of money (and your waistline, too!).

Cut down on (or cut out) the soda and the alcoholic beverages, too, for better physical and financial health. 🙂

6. Buy produce in season.

Another big budget buster is produce.

And it is especially expensive when you buy it out of season.

That goes for fruits as well as vegetables (like tomatoes, squash, and peppers).

I love fresh berries as much as the next gal, but I just can’t stomach (pun intended :)) the high prices when they’re not in season, so we generally don’t buy them when they’re not. It’s a rare treat if we do.

Instead, we eat fruit that is in season instead and frozen berries.

Frozen berries can be pretty economical when you mix them with other in-season fruits and veggies for smoothies. (We sneak in carrots and even broccoli and spinach in our fruit smoothies, and the kids don’t know the difference. #momhack)

7. Buy less meat and cheaper cuts of meat.

Another of my best grocery money saving tips is to save money on the meat that you buy.

The number one best way to save money on meat is to buy less meat and eat more meatless meals.

And the second best way to save money on meat is to buy less expensive types of meat and less expensive cuts of meat.

Buy primarily chicken, turkey, and pork and you will save a ton of money every month over the more expensive beef cuts like steaks and even ground beef.
